Over the weekend I participated in the Greenways of Greenwood 5K Run / Walk. I have thought about participating for several years. The entry fee benefits Greenwood trails. I love our trails. The miles and miles of trails in Greenwood are so wonderful to walk or bike on. They are beautiful, as well. The Parks Department does a wonderful job of maintaining the plantings along the walkways and spacing out seating areas which allow all ages to benefit from the trails.
I helped organize a Geek team from the library to walk the event. There were six of us who set up a booth before the event outside the Community Center and talked up the library to people as they were going in to register. We also asked participants to sign our Geek Share Board and we gave away Geek goodies.
Getting out in the community and allowing residents the opportunity to interact and learn about the library on their own turf is important. This form of outreach dispels library myths and shows that the library is a part of the community and is aware of activities going on within it – not just doing our own thing and always begging others to come to us.
Geek the Library will allow us many opportunities for this kind of interaction. I am super excited to be a part of it!
